Fluoride Gels and Toothpaste: Let’s talk cavity prevention. Since the 1930s, water fluoridation and topical applications of fluoride have become a valuable tool in the prevention of tooth decay; thus, fluoride-containing compounds are used in topical and systemic fluoride therapy for preventing the all too common cavity. Dentists apply highly concentrated fluoride products directly to a patient’s teeth about two times a year.
